This is sort of confusing and i dont see why theres a difference but basically an acronym can be pronounce like a word - so things like AIDS, AFLAC, RADAR.... etc each letter of those words stand for a word but when its an acronym from - 'Radio detection and ranging' you can simply pronounce it RADAR. Abbreviations are sort of the same as it is several words that are shortened but there is no focus on pronouncation of the shortened word for example FBI and USA - which each letter stands for something Federal Bureau Agency - FBI, so you pronounce it as F- B - I - seperately. You wouldn't say FBI as in like a normal word. So all acronyms are abbreviations but not all abbreviations are acronyms :)
