   the war was lost, his own people wanted to kill him as well as the russians for everything he has done to other russians etc. If he came into the hands of the russians then he would be tortured and i guess he would not be able to take it anymore so therefore he committed suicide.

   The real truth is obviously unknown but we can with the benefit of hindsight believe that one of the reason maybe because he was unable to bear what would happen to him once all the war was over.
