Basically, my little sister was telling me a story that one of her teachers told her. Apparently this woman once like licked the sticky/gluey bit of an envelope as you do and after a few hours her tongue started to swell up so she went to the doctors immediately and when the doc checked it he found cockroaches on her tongue because apparently the envelope's gluey bit has cockroach eggs on it! i don't now the rest of the story but this story has been in my mind the whole day and it's making me really self conscious and i've been having this really sick feeling all day like i looked it up and there was a lot about it on google aswell! so guyss please be careful and don't ever lick the gluey bit of an envelope! :/

  1. Hello there Sneahh,
I did a bit of research on this particular horrible story and found this..

If you lick your envelopes... You won't anymore!!!!!
A woman was working in a post office in California, one day she licked the envelopes and postage stamps instead of using a sponge. That very day the lady cut her tongue on the envelope.

A week later, she noticed an abnormal swelling of her tongue. She went to the doctor, and they found nothing wrong. Her tongue was not sore or anything.

A couple of days later, her tongue started to swell more, and it began to get really sore, so sore, that she could not eat. She went back to the hospital, and demanded something be done. The doctor, took an x-ray of her tongue, and noticed a lump. He prepared her for minor surgery.

When the doctor cut her tongue open, a live roach crawled out. There were roach eggs on the seal of the envelope. The egg was able to hatch inside of her tongue, because of her saliva. It was warm and moist...

Now im not sure about how this one incident would affect every other person licking envelope glue as i am sure that this may have been a one time freak accident thing.
i dont always read/hear things and immediatly beleive them so only lots of research and suffiicent evidence would convince me fully.
However i am not sure about what is in envelope glue but each brand has different ingredients and i am sure the european standard would not allow such things as cockroaches eggs in them.

Although one thing we can be sure of is be careful when licking ANYTHING, and be sure not to cut your tongue in the process as anything can go inside including bacteria and cause you a lot of problems. Dont worry about, im sure this isnt the case with normal envelopes.

I hope i have helped and as always be sure to keep yabbing =)

  7. Yup, I am aware of that story - and I never lick a envelope anyway. =) use a little water, if you don't have some use your fingers to wet the glue instead of licking the whole strip directly. I hope this helps.

  10. Aah yes I have heard of that. Apparently the factories they make those gluey bits in are not hygenic and have lots of rodents roaming around on the envelope trays.
    So I've heard anyway.
