  1. Into the Wild
    Fast Food Nation

Here's some choices, most are fairly short, and teacher's would be impressed if you had read them.

  2. "Falling Leaves" and "Chinese Cinderella" by Adeline Yen Mah. It's an autobiography of herself, which is kind of a sad story, plus also blends in the historical events of Mao rising and communism fear.

I suggest your read Chinese Cinderella first. Chinese Cinderella is like the child-friendly version of her story, and start en medias res when she comes home to meet her Aunt Baba and reaches until her father decides to send her to Medical School in Europe. Falling Leaves is more for the young adults and older and goes as far as the wedding of her grandparents until the end, years after the death of her father and step-mother.
